Driving Other Cars allows the policyholder to drive other cars on a third party basis only. This facility is not available to everybody and is subject to certain conditions.

Excess is the amount you, as the policyholder, must pay towards any claim you make. In the case of standard excess, you will pay the first €300 yourself. You have the option to increase the excess to €600, which will reduce your premium or you may decrease the excess to €125, which will incur a slight additional Premium. No excess applies to windscreen claims or to third party fire & theft cover.

If your previous car insurance has expired over 30 days ago, this represents a Gap in Cover. Reasons for this gap must be given.

Breakdown Rescue Cover includes cover for roadside and driveway assistance with up to one hour's free labour in the event of a mechanical breakdown, malicious damage, punctures, lost or stolen keys, keys broken or locked in car, etc. It covers towing your car to the nearest repairer or your own garage (whichever is closer); completion of journey if more than 30 km from your home along with other benefits which are subject to certain conditions and applies to both Ireland and the UK. Our open driving is an optional cover which allows other drivers to drive your car as long as they are over 25 and less than 70 years of age with a full EU licence can drive your car with your permission. They must have no convictions in the last 5 years, endorsements or disqualifications in the last 10 years or claims in the last 3 years and must not have more than 4 penalty points. To qualify, you the policyholder must have your full/EU licence for more than 5 years and have a minimum of 30% No Claims Bonus.

Windscreen damage constitutes accidental breakage of the windscreen or any other car window (excluding sunroof) and scratching of bodywork resulting solely and directly from such breakage.

This relates to any changes outside of the manufacturer’s specification that may have been made to your car e.g. modification for a wheelchair, spoilers, alloys etc.

This applies to persons who use their car in connection with their job. The employer will in some cases require a letter of indemnity from the insurance company. This means that if the insured has an accident while driving the car for work, the employer will not be held liable. This applies to those who use their car for work in some cases.

This optional extra allows you to Step-Back your No Claims Discount, which means that in the event of a single claim, you keep part of your discount. We will reduce your No Claims Discount as follows:

AIG policies

  • 55% to 30%,
  • 50% to 30%,
  • 40% to 20% or
  • 30% to 10%

Aviva policies

  • 50% to 20%,
  • 40% to 10% or
  • 30% or less to nil

For an extra premium, this option allows you to have up to two unlimited claims in a three year period, without losing your No Claims Discount. (We will not take account of windscreen damage or fire or theft claims.)

Your policy will automatically provide you with cover within the EU for up to 31 days. If further cover is required, please contact us prior to travelling.

Once you have returned all of the necessary documentation to Post Insurance, your certificate of insurance will be issued.

With our premium payment plan you can pay your premium over 10 monthly instalments. You can select to pay your instalments as follows:

  • By BillPay at the Post Office - using cash, cheque or debit card
  • By www.billpay.ie
  • By Direct Debit from your Bank Account. In this instance, you must pay your first instalment over the phone or by cheque, money order, credit card or debit card
  • You can then pay your remaining instalments automatically by Direct Debit from your Bank Account

  • Please note: a deposit of 20% is required for the first instalment and a service fee of up to 7% applies.

If you are overdue 3 days with a payment, your policy will fall into arrears. You will receive an SMS to the mobile number you provided advising you of this. If after 10 days you are still late with your payment we will issue a registered letter advising you that your policy will cancel in 10 days. If/when your policy cancels Post Insurance will advise the relevant underwriter and authorities of this and you will no longer be covered should you have/or become involved in an accident.

Should you wish to cancel your policy, you must send written instruction, inclusive of your policy number, and return your cert and disc of insurance to Post Insurance. A cancellation fee may apply. You can simply fill in the cancellation form (found on the car Documents & Forms page on our website) and return to us, along with your cert and disc of insurance at our freepost address: Post Insurance, PO Box 1, Freepost, Athlone, Co. Westmeath.

You must contact Post Insurance at the earliest possible stage. Any changes that are made may increase /decrease your premiums. Please note some adjustments to your policy may incur a fee.

Every customer is issued with a renewal notice prior to the end of their current policy. If you are paying by Direct Debit and you do not wish to renew you must contact Post Insurance 10 days prior to your renewal date to ensure the policy does not rollover. If you normally pay your premium by any other method you will need to call us on 1890 22 45 45.
